Historically speaking, locksmiths we’re known for making the entire locks from scratch including the keys. These we’re handmade, forging metal, shaping the pin tumblers, cutting screws, and doing much of the file work by hand.

With mass production, these sort of lock making procedures rapidly became outdated. Locksmiths are no longer about securing, repairing, and renovating locks. Today, locks are custom designed (safes and vaults for instance) and are made on modern production lines. Although locksmiths still re-key locks and replace lost keys to houses and automobiles, their primary work is designing better and safer locking mechanisms, upgrading older technology to newer and efficient technologies to secure industries, warehouses, homes and managing keys and key control systems for high security environments like technology companies and financial institutions.

They are often called to service modern electronic locks such as making keys for remote locking vehicles and the implementation of access control systems to manage and protect assets of individuals and corporations.

Locksmiths today are also employed to design systems build using layered security – a concept which work on the basis of the reasonable gain for an intruder or an attacker. They are called specifically to observe, make a determination of the level of risk and then recommend and implement the various layers of security needed to protect the assets. The more the security levels, the more skill, training and time it takes for an intruder to get past them all.

Obviously, each security level add up costs to the customer. An efficient and professional locksmith is needed to gauge the risk and determine appropriate levels of security while sticking to the budgets and not exceeding the costs.
